Astrology Update, March 23rd, 2017: A Time of Testing

Today started with a kindly sextile from the Moon in Aquarius to the Sun in Aries in wee early morning hours, giving us a last alignment of our conscious and unconscious selves in the disseminating portion of the lunar cycle before the upcoming New Moon in Aries.  The intentions that we set at the New Moon in Pisces and brought into fullness at the Full Moon in Virgo have been releasing into the world, and we are getting ready for the internal focus of the dark of the Moon, when we get clear on what matters most to us in setting our intentions for the next lunar cycle.  The Moon in Aquarius is future-oriented, instinctively bringing new ideas and viewpoints to the forefront, and aligning with the bold and active consciousness of the Sun in Aries gives us the drive to make real changes for the betterment of humankind and the planet.  While most of us in the Western Hemisphere were either asleep or winding down at the time of this alignment, still it set the stage for our dreams and began the tone of this day on a hopeful note.

A few hours later the Moon in Aquarius sextiled Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, amplifying the strength of our unconscious wisdom and our willingness to accept our own deep, inner knowing.  This alignment encouraged us to surrender to our ideals, feeling the power of our beliefs yet willing to continue to expand upon them, to see and embrace other perspectives in order to broaden our own.  This feeling built upon the energy of the Sun/Moon sextile, and fedinto the Moon’s next aspect, a loving and energetic sextile with Venus retrograde in Aries.

Venus retrograde has been going through the process of reassessing our connections with others, giving us greater understanding of what we value and take pleasure in, and how we give our affections and to whom.  Though Venus retrograde can sometimes be an uncomfortable time in terms of our interpersonal relationships and self-esteem, this morning’s Moon/Venus sextile gave us back some of the warmth and friendship that we need to sustain us, combining Aquarian instincts for betterment of self and society with the insights we have been gaining during this retrograde, and helping us to gain a stronger feeling for how our personal means of relating to people and enjoying life fits into the larger picture.

That sense of enjoyable companionship that the Moon/Venus sextile sought to encourage gets challenged this afternoon by the Moon in Aquarius squaring Mars in Taurus.  Mars in Taurus applies our energy and drive toward the material and physical matters of life, and may turn a blind eye to the more idealistic concerns of the Moon in Aquarius.  This afternoon we may well find ourselves confronted with choices that pit our principles and our material comforts against each other.  Since Venus rules Taurus and Mars rules Aries, there is a certain degree of sympathy between the energy of the Moon/Venus sextile and this square, which may help to navigate the challenges the Moon/Mars square brings up.  This aspect is an opportunity to see where we can reshape our material goals and comforts to accommodate our ideals and our sense of social responsibility, without sacrificing so much that we become resentful.

This sets us up for the big astrological event of the day, tonight’s square from Mercury in Aries to Pluto in Capricorn.  Mercury in Aries’ martial attitudes have been building through the afternoon, first warmed by the active camaraderie of the Moon/Venus sextile, then stirred to action through the challenges of the Moon/Mars square, and tonight our minds are likely to be primed for assertiveness and eager for new action.  But Pluto in Capricorn brings the powers-that-be to bear against minds and opinions that step out of line, and when these two clash there may well be fireworks.  Neither Aries nor Capricorn is known for backing down from a fight, especially when each is convinced they are in the right.  Pluto, like all transcendental planets, changes whatever he touches from the ground up, a disconcerting experience even under the best of circumstances.  And these are not the best of circumstances.  Political intrigue and strongarm tactics, techno-bureaucratic institutions with no sympathy for individual needs and desires, corporatocracy and plutocracy run amok, and a suffering planet undergoing drastic transformation at a pace faster than any of us care to admit or can really keep up with – these are the powers that our minds must grapple with now.  Pluto governs deep transformation, including death, and we may find ourselves facing fears now to give even the boldest martial spirit a run for its money.  We may find ourselves in a whirlwind of uncertainty tonight, gripped by changes we do not know how to navigate but know we must if we are to survive.  Tempers may flare, and there are likely to be some powerful arguments and clashes of will.  This is a time of testing, tempering our minds to face the inevitable reshaping of our society and our world, and ourselves along with them.  The ideas that we generate in response must determine what entrenched power systems we rid ourselves of in order to pass through this shadow of death and have a real chance at life.

Astrology Update, March 20th, 2017: Spring Equinox

A Blessed Equinox to you all!  The Sun entered Aries this morning, making this the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.  Aries is considered the youngest sign of the zodiac, the sign of newness and wonder and adventure, the sign of both the archetypal fool and hero.  The Sun in Aries brings with it a bolder attitude and a desire to make one’s mark on the world.  As the sap quickens in the trees in spring, so too does our blood quicken and stir us to action, to match the lengthening light with more liveliness and enthusiasm of our own.  We are likely to be more focused now, more driven and ambitious, and far less likely to give up on what matters to us.  With that drive and ambition may also come more aggression, and our tempers are likely to be shorter, but thankfully anger at this time isn’t just quick to flare – it’s also quick to die out, as there are newer and better things on the horizon to catch our interest, and grudges don’t last under this influence.  How can they when we are waking up with the world around us, coming alive after winter’s sleep?  This is a great time to focus on physical fitness, self-improvement, new projects, and getting outside for a breath of spring air.

Of course, the Moon in Sagittarius just had to conjunct Saturn right after the Sun entered Aries early this morning, so those of us awake at that hour probably were feeling more grumpy than enthusiastic, as Saturn in hard aspect with the Moon tends to turn our emotions serious and even depressive, and at that hour especially is either reminding us of all that we have to get done in the morning or making us want to roll over and get a few more hours of sleep.  Since that aspect started a void-of-course period for a few hours, chances are that we weren’t feeling our sharpest either, so sticking to routine was the best fallback position this morning, at least in the early morning hours.

Later this morning the Moon entered Capricorn, turning our emotions and instincts toward more practical matters, and giving us a greater degree of steadfastness and drive.  Capricorn is a sign known for its dedication and determination, and with the Moon in this sign we can seem more stoic and aloof while simultaneously being more devoted to whatever goal we have set our hearts on, even to the point of fanaticism.  We feel a greater sense of seriousness and responsibility during this transit, as Capricorn’s ruler is Saturn, the Lord of Karma who foreshadowed this transit with that conjunction earlier this morning, and who eternally reminds us of our limitations and insecurities, not simply to be a downer but rather to inspire in us the self-discipline to push through our fears and whatever obstacles we may face.  Capricorn is known for patience and perseverance, and with the Moon in this sign we may feel like we are facing mountains but will be thoroughly ready to climb them for as long as it takes to reach the top.

That patience was tested right out of the gate as within a few minutes of entering Capricorn the Moon squared the Sun in Aries, increasing our frustration and impatience and likely setting tempers flaring.  This Last Quarter Moon is a time of breaking down the final barriers in releasing the intentions we set at the New Moon and brought into bloom at the Full Moon, and sets the stage for us to fully let go of that which no longer serves us as we prepare to go into the darkness of the New Moon and plant new seeds in the psychic soil.  Our consciousness in Aries and our unconsciousness in Capricorn clash only in method, not in drive.  The Ram and the Goat are both creatures with horns, after all, equally stubborn.  If we can recognize that sense of kinship between our desires and see that there is a time and place for both our patience and our time to run wild, then this aspect can prepare us to become a truly unstoppable force.

That force may be well-utilized this afternoon as the Moon in Capricorn trines the North Node in Virgo, bringing our dedication to bear on the goals most crucial on our karmic path, and drawing to us the experiences we need to fulfill our souls’ deepest needs.  While the Sun in Aries may be calling us to behave more brashly, still our patient and responsible instincts are aligning with our souls’ purpose and giving us the persistence to work through all of the little details necessary to our growth.  This is a time to improve our health, learn new skills or hone old ones, and perfect our process.  We are not likely to tolerate half-measures now, and will focus on getting things right, for however long it takes.  Work that requires attention to detail is favored now, particularly scientific work, teaching, writing and communication, and gardening or landscaping.

Very late tonight the Moon in Capricorn squares Venus retrograde in Aries, setting our steady and responsible instincts and emotions against an already uncertain and frustrated sense of connection.  Venus in Aries wants to take an active role in interacting with others, but in retrograde finds herself reassessing how we are connect with each other, what we take pleasure in, and whether our affections are really true to who we are and what we really desire, and so there is a hesitancy or restlessness and even discontent with our ability to be with others and enjoy ourselves together now.  That hesitancy is exacerbated by the Capricorn Moon, which is reserved and not terribly good at giving the attention and feedback that the Aries Venus is craving.  The Capricorn Moon is serious while the Aries Venus wants fun but isn’t sure she knows how to get it.  This is all one big recipe for frustration and the potential for hurt feelings is high.  That said, the challenges presented by this aspect can be useful in reminding us that sometimes we need to get out of our shells a bit more, and at the same time what we really want may not be something that will come to us immediately.  Human emotion and interaction can be complicated, and both of these signs want to make it simple.  Yet real affection and connection isn’t just a flash in the pan and takes time to cultivate, and sometimes we need to look past our own desires to really see and understand the people around us and learn what it is that draws us to them and brings their affection to us in return.

Astrology Update, March 18th, 2017: Companionable Thoughts

Today’s astrological activity started with an early-morning square from the Moon in Sagittarius to the North Node in Virgo, pitting our fun-loving emotions and instincts against our karmic path.  We are feeling broad-minded and philosophical under the Sagittarian Moon but our souls are still demanding that we pay attention to the details that are going to get us the experiences and skills we need to fulfill our soul’s purpose, and this morning the disparity between what we feel and what we need may have come to a head.  Of course, since this was a lunar aspect it was short-lived, and therefore more part of the process of refining and course-correcting than anything likely to stimulate major change, especially since those of us in the Western Hemisphere were probably still sleep at that hour.  Even so, it is worth noting whatever dreams we may have woken up with this morning, as they could yield clues to resolving this conflict.

A short while later the Moon in Sagittarius conjuncted Black Moon Lilith, still early enough in the morning that most of us were likely asleep, and increasing the likelihood of us gaining wisdom through our dreams regarding our religious and philosophical beliefs and how they influence our emotions and instinctual reactions, especially since Black Moon Lilith aids us in bringing unconscious wisdom closer to consciousness.

The big astrological news of the day was the conjunction between Mercury and Venus retrograde in Aries, bringing our thoughts and communication to the same place that Venus is currently mulling over, namely how we connect with others which being true to our own identities and valuing our sense of self.  Our communication is likely to be more affectionate today, as well as more enjoyable, though still a bit self-absorbed.  We are more mindful of our connections with others now, and of how what we say expresses our values and feelings toward others.  Our thoughts and communications today are more likely to be concerned with what we find pleasurable and with building and maintaining connection, though that doesn’t automatically mean that we will be pulling others toward us.  In fact, what we say may well be more concerned with maintaining our sense of freedom and individuality.  We may try to express ourselves in new ways, or seek change in how we think about and communicate in our relationships.  We may find ourselves being simultaneously more active and more introspective, more interested in communicating and connecting through shared activities than through words, or focusing on how actions and activities affect our relationships.

The Moon in Sagittarius reinforced these considerations through trines this afternoon, first to Venus and then to Mercury, bringing our emotions to bear on our interpersonal communications.  Our thoughts and feelings today have been working together to assess our interactions and determine what is truly pleasurable and valuable to us, and where our affections really lie.  And with two fire signs in the mix getting this much emphasis, these aspects most likely didn’t lead to quiet contemplation, but rather active exploration.  Movement and action are what are needed to process these thoughts and feelings tonight.

Tonight the Moon in Sagittarius squares Neptune in Pisces, bringing us back around to confronting our escapist tendencies and addictive behaviors, especially when our more fun-loving side bumps up against our sensitivities and compassion for the state of others in a turbulent and wounded world.  All of today’s interactions with others and trying to determine what works best for ourselves while still maintaining the connections we need may well have led us to some uncomfortable feelings in relation to the larger picture and humanity as a whole, and we may well feel like burying our heads in the sand at the end of it all.  Like all transcendental planets, Neptune changes whatever it touches from the ground up, so our emotions that have gotten all revved-up with fiery possibilities and expanded philosophical horizons are now being touched by more universal forces that can turn what seemed clear before into a muddle of confusion.  Our feelings may suddenly turn wounded without us really understanding why.  Or we may become painfully aware of the impermanence in our lives and what we have to let go of in order to have our heart’s desire, and it may seem overwhelming.  Whatever the case, we need to have compassion for ourselves and others now, and recognize that tonight’s confusion doesn’t have to result in avoidance or falling back on self-destructive patterns.  The path ahead may seem illusory, but what is clouding our vision is only temporary, and we may still gain some illumination through the process, however uncertain it seems now.

Astrology Update, March 13th, 2017: Setting Minds Alight

Today started off in the early morning hours with Mars in Taurus trining the North Node in Virgo, aligning our ambition, drive, and energy with our karmic path, increasing our momentum toward the experiences and skills that we need to gain in this life.  This makes today a great day to tend to crucial details in moving ourselves forward and achieving our goals for increasing our well-being on our souls’ level.  The perfectionist nature of Virgo is heightened at this time, with plenty of power driving it, so there is always the possibility of overdoing things now, but this is a harmonious aspect, so I suspect that we will be more driven to pay attention to process and growth, and may find ourselves experiencing a boost in physical vitality as a result.

Still early this morning, the Moon in Libra sextiled Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, bringing our unconscious reactions into alignment with our unconscious wisdom, and allowing us to gain understanding of our shadow side that we can put to good use, especially when it comes to the shadow side of our beliefs and how we relate to others in a larger social context.  Black Moon Lilith deals with the knowledge that hovers in the space between the unconscious and the conscious realms, so we may find the information that occupied our unconscious this morning slowly filtering into the light as the day progresses.

That light may seem brighter this afternoon as Mercury leaves the watery, mystical realm of Pisces for fiery and direct Aries, giving our thoughts and communication a push in a more active direction.  Aries is ruled by Mars, so today’s Mars/North Node trine is likely to influence that action, focusing our minds on the areas of our lives that our souls most want to explore.  We may find ourselves a bit more headstrong now, more self-directed and self-interested.  Aries governs the head, so even though Aries can be a bit impulsive and thoughtless at times, still intelligence is valued by this sign, just not of the ponderous and slow variety.  Mercury in Aries is quick, interested in life, excited by possibility, and eager to try anything and everything.  Aries tends to be more egoic than other signs – after all, it is Aries’ mission to carve out an identity for the self – so we may find ourselves identifying with our ideas more at this time, more likely to defend them as if we are defending our very lives, and so we may find ourselves embroiled in more arguments during this Mercury transit.  On one hand, Aries can be quick to anger, so we may wind up in debates that seem to spring up out of nowhere.  On the other hand, Aries is quick to move on and doesn’t hold a grudge, so those debates may be over and forgotten just as quickly as they’ve begun.  Newness and courageousness of thought are the key aims of this transit, getting us out of whatever mental rut we’ve languished in previously (and hopefully made our peace with during the Mercury transit in Pisces), and trailblazing the way for the Sun’s entry into Aries next week, when our taste for action really starts to cook.

Tonight the Aries fires are fed by our emotions and instincts, as the Moon in airy Libra opposes Venus retrograde in Aries.  Venus rules Libra, so even though emotions under a Libran Moon tend to be more cool, reserved, and intellectual, this Libran Moon feels the heat that Venus is traveling through, albeit through the filter of retrograde reassessment.  Oppositions increase awareness, asking us to balance two very different temperaments.  Libra is peace-loving, social, and all about relationships, whereas Aries is aggressive, freedom-loving (especially with Uranus and Eris continuing their transit here), and all about personal identity and development.  However, not only is Libra’s ruler transiting Aries, but Libra is also the sign most concerned with balance.  More than any other sign (except possibly Pisces) Libra is eternally aware of its opposite – Libra is always conscious of the other side to any story.  Tonight’s Moon/Venus opposition then is a unique opportunity to find balance in our relationships through our emotions and affections, gaining greater understanding of how we connect with others while still maintaining an integral sense of self.  Since the Moon operates on the unconscious level, and Venus is very much about sensory experience, this understanding is not to be gained through thinking so much as doing, so this is a time to be social, whether one-on-one or in a broader sense, and enjoy this increased awareness of our connections and the feelings and pleasures we share with each other.

Astrology Update, March 9th, 2017: Full of Heart

As with the Mercury/Pluto sextile on March 7th, today we experience harmony between our practical goals and our compassionate sensitivity as a result of the Sun/Pluto sextile that started off today first thing in the very wee hours of the morning (some of us were just getting to bed at that hour…).  However, this time it’s not simply our minds getting a boost of power from Pluto, but rather our whole consciousness.  The core of our being is feeling supported by the larger forces in our lives rather than at odds as is too often the case.  We are now conscious of the process of transformation in our lives and the lives of those around us, and may feel a certain degree of connection with others resulting from that.  This is the season of shedding the old, unwanted baggage of the past year or more (or perhaps a few pounds from this winter), preparing for the burst of energy and activity that comes with Spring, and this aspect helps us to get more comfortable with that process, even when it’s not actually comfortable.  Pisces is a sign of contradictions, after all, adept at working within paradox, and Capricorn has mastered the art of the silver lining, seeing opportunity in every seeming setback.  These two signs navigate loss better than the rest of the zodiac, so now is the time to take full advantage of their assistance and perhaps do a little preparatory spring cleaning, whether of our psyches or our actual physical surroundings.

Later this morning the Moon in Leo trined Venus in Aries, giving a magnanimous boost of fiery self-confidence from our unconscious to our social relations that have been in the retrograde process of reassessment, and may have been feeling a bit shaky since the beginning of the retrograde this past weekend.  Though the Moon’s action is unconscious, Leo’s ruler is the Sun, so Leo is also reaping the benefit of today’s Sun/Pluto sextile, so the Lion is feeling mighty today, albeit with a more sympathetic bent thanks to the Sun’s position in Pisces.  This in turn helps to bring out the fun, flirty side of Venus in Aries, and perhaps even some childlike joy, as Aries is youngest sign and Leo rules the 5th house of children.  Thus, our instinctual response to this alignment is likely to be playful and affectionate, reminding us that even serious matters can benefit from a bit of fun – games teach us a host of beneficial skills, after all, in addition to increasing camaraderie through friendly competition.

Early this evening Mars enters Taurus, giving our energies a break from the more aggressive side of competition and turning our focus to a more steady, practical mode.  Taurus is the sign of fixed earth, slow and not easily stirred to action, yet having a deep reserve of power in the material realm.  Mountains don’t normally make much visible movement, but when they do, they are a force to be reckoned with.  Thus, we are likely to find ourselves in much less of a hurry than we were during Mars’ transit of Aries, but when we do have a mind to move, when we really want to get something done, now we put the force of a mountain behind it.  A Taurus roused to action is an unstoppable force!  It is also a force that favors the finer things in life.  Our focus now is likely to be centered on material needs and desires, physical and financial security.  This is a good time to tend to our bodies in preparation for the spring and summer months, though Taurus likes its food so we may experience some dietary challenges along the way.  This is definitely a good time to tend to financial matters, not simply in connection with tax season but in relation to building and improving upon our finances and establishing better habits with regard to money and material things.  This is also a good time for enjoying the arts, whether as creator, audience, or patron, as Venus’ rulership of Taurus gives Mars in this position more impetus toward creativity and aesthetically-informed activities.

This Mars/Venus interaction is heightened now, as Mars’ entry into Taurus, one of the two signs that Venus rules and Venus’ current retrograde in Aries, one of the two signs that Mars rules, has put the two gendered personal planets in a state of limited mutual reception, each in the place of the other’s power until the beginning of April, with potential support for each other as a result.  I say that this is a limited mutual reception because with Venus in retrograde, her usual power is diminished, being expressed in a mode of re-assessment while retracing her steps through Mars’ home sign.  Also, because these two are not currently in aspect to each other, the state of mutual reception is more subdued now, but will slowly grow stronger as they approach the same degree of each sign, arriving at a semi-sextile aspect on March 21st (a gently supportive aspect of 30 degrees apart).  Still, despite the weakened state of their reception, there may be a sense of increased understanding of the other’s space during this time and greater awareness between the two, which may provide opportunities for better gender relations during this time as well as for more understanding of non-binary gender identities.

Late tonight the Moon in Leo sextiles Jupiter in Libra, bringing Jupiter’s expansive optimism in relationships and social realms to magnify the proud, generous, joyful feelings of the Leo Moon.  This is the perfect time for late-night camaraderie, creative expression, or more intimate interactions.  Performers get an extra dose of drama tonight, in all the right ways.  Children may be wakeful later than usual, and perhaps unusually ebullient, so parents would do well to be prepared for additional story requests, or difficulty in surrendering the video game controller in favor of bed.  And our lovers may be more demanding than usual, though we aren’t likely to complain about that under this passionate Moon.  However this influence plays out, it’s a good time for revelling in whatever brings us joy.
